Borussia Dortmund's Commanding Victory
The UEFA Champions League playoff between Borussia Dortmund and Sporting CP kicked off with an intense start in Lisbon on February 11, 2025. Borussia Dortmund, under the new guidance of Niko Kovac, ultimately emerged with a strong 3-0 lead, thrilling fans and asserting their prowess in European football.
The first half was a period of tentative exchanges and defensive vigilance from both sides. Sporting CP, backed by a vociferous home crowd, initially looked more threatening. Maxi Araújo nearly set the tone early with a shot in the 13th minute that painfully bounced off the crossbar. Konrad Harder also sought an early breakthrough but found his effort from distance thwarted by a well-alert Gregor Kobel in Dortmund's goal.
Meanwhile, Dortmund found it tough to establish an attacking rhythm. They did, however, almost find joy near halftime when Karim Adeyemi narrowly missed netting a pre-intermission lead with a close-range shot grazing past the post.

Second-Half Masterclass by Dortmund
A different Borussia Dortmund emerged after the break. Once the second half commenced, they exemplified efficiency and creative execution. In the 60th minute, Serhou Guirassy broke the deadlock by leaping to head in a beautifully curved cross from Julian Brandt, giving their supporters sweet reason to cheer.
Sporting CP's hopes dwindled as the German side turned up the heat. Only eight minutes after taking the lead, Guirassy elegantly set up Pascal Groß. With a delightful mix of precision and flair, Groß executed an unusual yet effective finish at the far post, doubling Dortmund's advantage.
For Sporting, the introduction of Viktor Gyökeres in the 59th minute could not disrupt Dortmund’s growing momentum. The situation deteriorated further for the home side as Adeyemi, later in the 82nd minute, sprinted forward on a clinical counterattack. Teaming up once again with the impassioned Brandt, he managed to calmly slot the ball past Rui Silva, cementing a comprehensive victory for the visitors.
The standout performances came courtesy of the trio—Adeyemi, Guirassy, and Brandt. Their cohesive play not only showed composure but also highlighted the coordinated attacking strategy orchestrated by Kovac, marking his first victory since taking charge of the club with great promise.
This win sets Borussia Dortmund up nicely for the return leg, offering them a favorable margin and significant psychological advantage. Sporting CP, on the other hand, faces an uphill battle in the second leg as they must overturn a three-goal deficit—an endeavor that will test their resilience and tactical astuteness.
